An inter-war campaign of church-building

southwark

In the inter-war years, the diocese of Southwark, in south London, carried out a sustained campaign of church building, to meet the needs of the housing estates rapidly growing to the south of London.

This significant programme led to the erection of twenty new churches, with five further churches enlarged or completed, together with the construction of ten new church halls.

Although designed within a few years of each other, the buildings range from the deliberately conservative to the experimental and intentionally modern.

This is the first book to deal with the churche as a group, placing them in context, and providing a unique snapshot of English inter-war church building in the round. It is illustrated by many photographs, plans and nearly one hundred original drawings. You can order it from the society at nineteen pounds post free within the UK; for overseas orders, carriage will be charged extra - please enquire. To place an order, send us an e-mail.  A downloadable version (lacking the illustrations) is also available.
