Medieval roof angel at Dean, Bedfordshire. He holds a pair of pincers,
one of the so-called 'Instruments of the Passion',
the tools used to torture and execute Christ over the first Easter
weekend. It has been argued that there is a close
relationship between images such as this and the costumes used in medieval
Passion Plays, and certainly one can imagine these wings
as being stage props, pinned to the back of a normal human figure.
