Dr Digi's image for July 2003 (caption at bottom)
godmanchester

A jester on the stalls at Godmanchester church, Cambridgeshire. You can see the bell on his cap, at the centre, and another bell each side. The stalls here are full of carvings, many of them not with any religious significance. The stalls were probably made in the 1470s (they have on them the initials of a vicar of that time). That means that more than 25,000 Sundays have past since they were new, more than 25,000 hands have rested on our jester's head, and there have been more than 25,000 occasions for his nose to wear down or his smile to grow a little tired.
