<>TSt James the Great, Talaton, Devon
High up on the corners of the medieval tower, some rare figures survive, peering out as they have done for half a millennium or more. Here is one of them.
Who is this gentleman? Is he one of the four evangelists?
There is an angel at his feet, which might just indicate St Matthew.
He holds a scroll in his left hand, and what looks like the remains of a scroll in his right. That might have told us something - once.
But then - what's that he's wearing at his waist - the remains of an arrow?
Ideas as to the gentleman's identity welcome - please contact us.
In the meantime, he stands near the sky, looking down, patiently waiting for walrus moustaches to make a come back.
