Help with . . .

This is a new page, and we hope it will improve over time. Please send us an e-mail with any suggestions.
It tries to put you in touch with groups and organisations who may be able to help you.

The fact that an organisation appears on this page does not mean it has in any way been vetted by us, or that we can vouch for it. Nor is it the case that non-appearance on this page means we disapprove of an organisation - it probably simply means we have overlooked it!

If you can't find what you are looking for here, feel free to send us an e-mail with your particular query.

Chat room
If you are looking for a group of like-minded people to chat about churches, why not join the Churchcrawler chat room? It's run by Phil Draper, and you can find out more about it on his Churchcrawler website (near the bottom of the page) - or just click here to go the Yahoo sign on page, get yourself an id and password (if you don't have one already) and you're away.

Looking after churches
For Church of England churches, the best starting point is the Churchcare website. For training, SPAB's 'Faith in Maintenance' one day courses for churchwardens and similar are highly-regarded - details on the Faith in Maintenance website.

Craftsmen
Much information is held by your diocese and by the Council for the Care of Churches.  Cathedral Communications publish an extensive commercial online directory.

Historic church trusts
The National Churches Trust (fomerly the Historic Churches Preservation Trust) is a national body. There are County Trusts for many counties.

Aerials
For the official view, try the National Aerial agreement website.

Grants and fundraising
For a general list of grant-givers to historic buildings, you might find the Funds for Historic Buildings website useful. You should also look at the Churchcare website. English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund are the largest grant givers. A very practical site is the one put together by two north Bedford churches (St Mark's and Putnoe Heights) at http://www.thisischurch.com/. Your local reference library will also have some very thick books which list all grant-givers in the UK.

VAT refunds
For VAT refunds for reparis to listed churches, look at the Listed Places of Worship scheme administered by the Department of Culture Media and Sport.
