Message from the Victorian Society, received 25 July 2003
THERE ARE A FEW PLACES STILL AVAILABLE ON OUR BODLEY AND GARNER IN LONDON
DAY ON SATURDAY 9
AUGUST 2003
GF Bodley and Thomas Garner designed few churches in London and its
environs, but they cover the whole spectrum of the firm's
ecclesiastical work, from inner-city St Michael, Camden Town to smartly
fashionable Holy Trinity, Prince Consort Road and Eton
College's mission church in Hackney Wick, a celebrated masterpiece
with ancillary buildings by AE Street and Cecil Hare. We will also
visit a distinguished suburban church, St Faith, Brentford, and the
splendid St John, Epping, a major but relatively little-known work of
Bodley’s final decade. This intensive day will provide an introduction
not just to a significant architectural firm but also to the varied
forms and functions of Anglican churches between 1880 and 1910. The
day will be led by Michael Hall, Deputy Editor of Country Life,
who is writing a book on Bodley.
Timetable
The coach will leave the Victorian Society offices at 1 Priory Gardens,
London W4 1TT promptly at 9am. 9.30am St Faith, Brentford
10.45am Holy Trinity, Prince Consort Road 12.30pm St Michael, Camden
Town 1.00 (approx) lunch in St Michael’s church hall. We
shall depart at 2pm. 2.45pm St Mary, Hackney Wick 4.30pm St John, Epping,
where we shall have tea. We plan to leave St John no
later than 5.30pm. On the way back to Priory Gardens we will be making
one central London drop-off. We should be back at Priory
Gardens by approximately 7pm. Although we have allowed generous times
for travel between each church, the unpredictability of
London traffic means there may be delays.
Cost
Coach, lunch with wine, afternoon tea, talks and notes, and donations
to churches are included in the price of £35. Please fill out and
return the attached application form by Monday 29 July 2003.
To book after Monday 29 July, please telephone Victorian Society first
to check availability. You can book by telephone with your credit card.
